Honey French Toast (For Two)

As far as farm simulation games go, I’m a massive Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons fan, and I couldn’t stop thinking about the Honey Toast recipe in Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns. The ingredients are only honey and bread, which I liked, but I wanted to add a bit more pizzaz.

So I took my homemade honey bread from my bread machine and made a fabulous Honey French Toast out of it. With honey both inside and outside of the bread, I was in honey heaven!

This is now my favorite french toast recipe. I can’t stop eating it!

INGREDIENTS

2 thick slices of brioche bread, or my easy honey bread cut in 1″ thick pieces

1/4 cup (50 grams) of milk or cream

2 tablespoons (28 grams) of butter, separated

1 egg

1 tablespoon (15g) of honey

1/2 tsp (2g) vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

1 tablespoon (14g) of butter, melted

2 tablespoons (40g) of maple syrup

1 teaspoon (5g) of powdered sugar, for dusting

1 teaspoon (7g) honey, for drizzling

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Melt 1 tablespoon of butter and let it cool for a few minutes
  • In a shallow dish, combine the milk, melted butter, egg, honey, sugar, and salt together and whisk with a fork until it’s smooth.
  • Heat up a frying pan on medium-low heat with the other tablespoon of butter until it’s a little sizzle-y. (Don’t burn the butter, though!)
  • Dip your bread in the shallow dish to sop up the milk mixture. Let it sit in the mixture for 10-15 seconds on each side. (Don’t soak too long!)
  • Place the bread in the pan for about 3-5 minutes on each side, covered partially with the lid, until all the sides are golden brown (I like it a little darker, myself.) It should be a bit crispy on the edges.
  • Put the french toast on a plate while you make the topping.
  • TOPPING: In a small pan, melt the butter with the syrup until it’s all the way heated through and the butter is completely melted.
  • Pour the butter/syrup mix on the french toast
  • Drizzle a little bit more honey all over the french toast (choose your own sweetness level!)
  • Get a small sifter or tea strainer and sprinkle powdered sugar on top of the french toast as a finale!

NOTES

Serve alongside some scrambled eggs and sausage for a perfect romantic brunch idea for two. (Or one. I ate all of this myself, who’s kidding?)

DON’T OVERSOAK. Thin bread or soaking the bread too long will cause it to fall apart while cooking.

Yes! If you have thinner bread, like sandwich bread from the store, this recipe should be good for 3-4 pieces of that. Just soak it for about 5 seconds on each side of the bread.

For thick bread, I recommend a medium-low heat with the lid on all the way or half way for a couple of minutes on each side to make sure it cooks all the way through.

For thin bread, you won’t need to use a lid.

Yes, you can make the egg/milk mix ahead of time and keep it in the fridge overnight.

Why do you have leftovers??? Well, I guess if you’re a quitter, you can store leftovers in foil or an airtight container in the fridge for a day or two. Reheat in your oven for a few minutes to eat.
